Are You Alert to Spiritual Dangers?

Part 1

Tuesday April 21st 2020

2 Peter 3:17

Given these trying times, it is reasonable to think that it is the things of the world which we should be wary of and fear. However, this is not the case. For the greatest perils in this world come not from outside of us, but from within us. These dangers come from our sinful nature and from our craving for Truth, and they threaten our spiritual life and misguide us.

It seems almost everyone is trying to explain what is happening to our world right now, but we must stay alert to what we are responding to, and how we are behaving. We must watch out for:

  1. When we prefer to depend on ideas, opinions and philosophies, rather than on what the Almighty says in the Scriptures.
  2. When we follow anything that feels theological.
  3. When we are fearful of re buking error if we have started on the wrong path.

So often, we listen to the lie that was first uttered in the Garden of Eden: “You shall decide for yourself over good and evil.” Then, when others come to correct us, we stand firm in our ways and miss the opportunity to gain wisdom and grow spiritually.

If we are not spiritually alert, we are soon to become spiritually inert. This is the worst thing that could happen to us, and is far worse than any disease, any global pandemic or any economic frustration.

Let’s give heed to the Scripture to be on guard. Later this week, we will talk about how we can avoid spiritual dangers, or betterr, WHO it is that helps us. Here is a hint: His name is Jesus.

“I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.” Rom 16:17-18.
