‘Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”’ (Galatians 3:13)
‘For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ (Romans 6:23)
The first curse to ever come upon mankind for breaking God’s laws is death.
God had told Adam and Eve:
“When you eat of it [the tree of the knowledge of good and evil] you will surely die.” (Genesis 2:17)
- Man disobeyed God
- Was driven from the garden
- Could no longer eat of the tree of life
- He became slave of sin and death
Death has been a mystery in all ages.
- Science cannot explain it.
- Philosophy turns poetical when facing this terrible enemy.
God’s original plan was for man to live forever!
This is why God had to put them out of the Garden of Eden.
“He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” (Genesis 3:22)
Physical death is an enemy of God.
The Bible says that physical death is the last enemy that shall be put under foot.
“The last enemy to be destroyed is death.” (1 Corinthians 15:26)
But the real you is a spirit.
Our spirit operates through the:
And the soul operates through the body.
At physical death, the man and his soul leave the physical body and go to their home.
In the story of the “rich man and Lazarus” in Luke, Jesus said:
“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’”
Note: angels carried him and not his body.
Him = spirit and soul to Abraham’s side.
Lazarus and the rich man were still conscious.
Man does not die like an animal.
Three kinds of death:
a) Spiritual death
b) Physical death
c) Eternal death
The real death is the spiritual death.
Second death or Eternal death is the home of the spiritually dead.
Spiritual death leads to physical death.
So when God said to Adam the day ‘you eat of it you will surely die’ God referred to the spiritual death that is separation from God.
No more fellowship/communion with God.
Spiritual death gives us a sinful nature used by the devil.
The Bible calls those who live in the flesh, sinful nature children of the devil.
“… you belong to your father the devil.”
1 John 3:8
“He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning.”
So mankind became slave of sin, death and the devil.
So in order to be rescued man needed a redeemer – needed someone to change his nature.
– Good works were not enough.
– Polishing the outside was not enough.
Mankind needed a new nature.
It is like taking a mule and trying to make a racehorse!
– File his teeth
– Polish his hooves
– Feed finest foods
But in the race he won’t make it, because he is a mule – he has a wrong nature.
Thank God we can be born again!
Because we are a spirit living in a body we can be re-born.
Our nature can be changed.
We can become a new creature in Christ Jesus.
– Can be well educated
– Can be a millionaire
– Can be a good social-worker
– Can be a good religious person
But he cannot stand in the presence of God unless he is born again by the Spirit of God; unless he/she becomes a child of God, with God’s nature.
He can become alive unto God once again as he was before the fall.
The Bible says:
“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law.”
Jesus did not have to die.
He was perfect, sinless.
But He died for us.
He took upon himself our sin nature.
Through His sacrifice He did away with sin.
“Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.”
Jesus took upon himself the nature of spiritual death, in order that we might have eternal life.
“I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.”
Jesus saved us from spiritual death.
All who now received the sacrifice of the cross and obey the Word of God are brought back to the tree of life.
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.”
New birth is a gift of God, it takes place immediately.
“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins…”
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Now there are only two camps:
Are you a child of God or of the devil?
Which kingdom are you in?
Are you free from death?
“… because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”
