The Gifts of the Spirit

Part 1

June 20th, 2019
Read: 1 Corinthians 12:7-11

There are nine spiritual gifts generally divided into 3 categories: 1) Discerning Gifts, 2) Declarative Gifts and 3) The dynamic gifts. The Holy Spirit imparts spiritual gifts as He sees fitting for each believer. Starting with thediscerning gifts, over the next few weeks we will look at each and how they enrich the lives of believers.

(1) Word of knowledge.
“Supernatural (divine) insight or understanding of circumstances or a body of facts by revelation.” In John 4 we see Jesus using this gift in the story of the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus told the woman “you’re right! You don’t have a husband- for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now.” The Holy Spirit at work in this gift gives believers specific knowledge about a situation. Pray and ask God how to use the information He has given you.

(2) Word of wisdom.
“A divine answer or solution for a particular event.” In this gift, the Holy Spirit gives an appropriate word or answer to a particularly troublesome situation or topic. In John 9 Jesus heals a blind man who is then questioned by religious leaders. The religious leaders looking to trap him state, “This Man Jesus is not from God, for He is working on the Sabbath… we know He is a sinner.” The formerly blind man led by the Holy Spirit said, “Why, that’s very strange… we know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but He is ready to hear those who worship Him and do His will… If this Man were not from God, He couldn’t have done it.” (Jn. 9: 16-32).

(3) Discerning of spirits.
‘To be made aware of the presence of a demonic spirit.” In Acts 16 the girl following Paul was saying the right words, but from a demonic spirit… she was a fortune teller. Before long, the Holy Spirit made Paul discern the demonic spirit and cast it out in the name of Jesus (v.18). This gift is not a weird feeling or a prediction of what is to come, it is the Holy Spirit making the believer aware of the work of demonic forces in a situation. Light and darkness do not agree. Believers to whom the Holy Spirit reveals the actions of demonic spirits should pray to find out how to proceed with their knowledge.

Word of wisdom, word of knowledge, and discerning of spirits are collectively called the discerning gifts. These gifts are powerful in the lives of believers. Do you feel the Holy Spirit has given you any of these gifts? Are you afraid to use them? Pray and ask God to, like His disciples, give you wisdom and boldness in use of these gifts.
