How to Overcome Strongholds

Date: January 23rd, 2019
Read: Romans 12:2

What is a stronghold? A stronghold is a mental habit—a mindset—which hinders personal and spiritual growth. Do you have any strongholds in your life? The answer is most likely, yes! If we want to maintain our New Year’s resolutions, and continue our new lifestyles, we must realize the strongholds in our lives and how to overcome them. What makes Christianity so exciting is that our minds can be transformed into the image of Christ. God wants to change us into the image of His Son, Jesus!

Here are some ways to overcome strongholds:

(1) Combat the world and your flesh by renewing your mind. Spend time reading the Bible, praying, and meditating on the Word of God. You must allow the Word of Christ to dwell in you richly, to renew your mind. The Psalmist says, “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (Ps 119:11).

(2) Take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.
You are not just up against negative thought patterns, but also the enemy, who is scheming to fill your mind with thoughts that are contrary to God’s heart, and God’s plans for your life. Strongholds develop because we believe the lies of the enemy, but Jesus wants to set you free with the truth. With Christ, if you resist the enemy, he will flee from you.

(3) Rely on the power of the Holy Spirit.
You must turn to God and keep looking to Him, until you are free. It is only God, through the finished work of His Son on Calvary, that can change our innermost being.

Be encouraged! God is able to defeat ALL strongholds in your life. Trust Him!
