Stay Alert to Spiritual Dangers

Part 2

September 11th, 2019
Read: 1 Corinthians 16:5-18

Last week we looked at the importance of staying alert to spiritual dangers and the hidden consequences of deception. This week we will look at how we can stay alert to spiritual dangers.

Firstly, Christ alone is the one who can hold us fast in the strong currents of this world. We stay alert by remaining close to Christ. How do we do this?

a) By spending time with Him in prayer.
Prayer increases our sensitivity and alertness to what is right and wrong. The more time we spend gazing into the face of Jesus, the more clearly we will see the difference between that which is true and that which is untrue.

b) By spending time in the Scriptures.
The more time spent in Scripture, the more the Scriptures will impress upon our minds and change our hearts. We begin to think and act in accordance with the Word of God. When Jesus was tempted by the devil He used Scripture to combat saying, “It is written” (Mat. 4:4,7). If Jesus used Scriptures to overcome temptation, how much more do we need the Scripture to overcome the devil’s schemes!

c) By understanding the times.
The Bible tells us, the children of Issachar “understood the times and knew what Israel should do” (1 Chron. 12: 32). Every Christian today should have some understanding of what is happening in our world and be open and willing to learn. Don’t be like the ostrich who sticks its head in the sand thinking if he can’t see the danger it won’t come. You must know what is happening around you and how to respond appropriately. How can we be spiritually alert if we do not understand the schemes of the evil one?

Remaining in Christ is the only sure way to keep us on guard to spiritual dangers. When the enemy comes with deception, if we’re filled with the Word we can say, “It is written”.
