Stay Alert to Spiritual Dangers
September 4th, 2019
Read: Genesis 3
Paul in 1 Corinthians 3:13 warns us to “be on your guard and stand firm in the faith.” Some of the greatest perils in life come from within us, causing us to lose direction and get off course.
We ned to watch out for when we: a) Accept standards that are not God’s standard; b) Are fearful of rebuking error; c) Water down the truth of God’s Word; d) Trim our sails to any theological wind; and e) Prefer to depend on ideas, opinions, and philosophies, than on what God says in the Scriptures. Give heed to Scripture, be on guard and stay spiritually alert to dangers. When we are not spiritually alert, we become spiritually dormant.
We need to be alert because we are easily deceived. The serpent said to Eve, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’” (Gen. 3:1). Stand firm. Believe God’s Word. Jesus said in Matthew 24:4, “Watch out that no one deceives you.”
Do you feel confused about what God said or what to believe? When the serpent tempted Eve she was sure of what God said, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, or touch it, or you will die’ (Gen. 3:3). Be alert to craftiness and the temptation to give in to what pleases you, than the will to hold fast to the Word of God. The serpent responded with sure firmness “You won’t die!… you’ll be just like God knowing everything from good to evil” (vv.4-5).
Eve gave in because she saw and heard from the serpent what she wanted. But as with all deception, the full story wasn’t told. The consequences of her sin were hidden from her.
Stay alert! Watch out that no one deceives you!
