Part 1 – The Beginning of Wisdom

Proverbs 4:7 ‘Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.’

The saying goes, ‘A little bit of wisdom goes a long way!’

Wisdom is knowledge rightly applied.

You may know how to get married and have a family – but do you know how to put the whole thing together and build a home?

Here is another great quote,

“Knowledge understands God – wisdom talks with God.”

Wisdom comes from God.

Billy Graham said:

“Knowledge is horizontal, but wisdom is vertical – it comes down from above.”

Sometimes you find people, trying to even correct God! “I know the Bible says this, but I think…” That will never turn right for any of us.

Proverbs 26:12 ‘There is more hope for fools than for people who think they are wise.’

4 types of people in proverbs

1. Simple

The simple is somebody who is not wise – clueless.

There is a bit of this “simpleness” in all of us, because we actually think we know best. (Proverbs 7:7)

We need people who have our backs and will speak into our lives.

Young people please remember you have not lived long enough to make every decision about your life on your own.

Trust your parents, your spiritual friends and the leadership God has put over you.

The cure for the simple: TIME

You need to live long enough or have people around you who have lived long enough – who can speak into your life.

2. The fool

The Bible has a lot to say about foolish people.

The fool knows when something is wrong, but yet choses to go ahead with it!

“I know what the label says, but I’d rather have that in my body right now…”

“I will take my chances…” Proverbs 10:23

There is a little bit of a ‘fool’ in all of us. We ask the fool – why on earth would you do that?

The cure for foolishness is: TRAGEDY.

Sometimes it takes a tragedy to convert us from a foolish heart. God doesn’t create the tragedy but He will use tragedy to get our attention.

Someone said, “Every tragedy has a lesson equal in significance to its heartbreak.”

God is a restorer, He will take the worst time of our life and turn it around for good – if we let Him. And there is purpose to our pain.

3. The mocker/ scoffer

The mocker is the fool on steroid; he takes things to another level.

Not only does he/she do what is wrong and foolish – but they criticize the person who does that which is right.

There are lots of mockers on social media. They love to make comments just to mess up your life. The Bible says we ought not to engage with a mocker (Proverbs 9:7-8)

A mocker lives for debate and you will be abused if you participate with these people. Mockers will not change when rebuked, they will hate you.

There is only one cure for the mocker: GOD

God will have to do something in the mocker’s life!

4. The wise

The wise is not a person who is smarter, more education, understands the Bible better, or lived a long time. The person who is wise is teachable! (Proverbs 9:9)

The wise when instructed will immediately say “Thank you for telling me that!”

Wise people are pliable. They do not have a defence mechanism.

We all need God and others who love God to speak into our lives and correct us.

Proverbs 9:10  ‘Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.’

Tell God, “Lord, you are truly amazing, you know far more that I know, I honour you and respect you.”

Wisdom begins with the worship of God-Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth.

Fear does not mean to be afraid of God. Your view of God will determine your relationship with God. Our God is full of mercy, full of compassion, slow to anger, righteous, forgiving.

Three declarations for the fear of God

1. God is awesome

Psalm 33:8  ‘Let the whole world fear the Lord, and let everyone stand in awe of Him.’

When we think of what God has done here at New Life, only He could do it.

Why did God even choose us? Isaiah 40:28

2. God is holy

I love the contemporary nature of our Church. We are doing everything we can to make Christianity attractive – but make no mistake about it, let’s not become familiar with God. He is not the big man upstairs!

He is Holy! When He walks in the room we bow down before Him. Psalm 99:5

He is not my buddy! We are His servants. God owes us nothing!

Our songs must be about Him. Magnify the name of Jesus. He has already given His best for everything that we need. Hebrews 12:28-29

3. God is right

When we see one way and God sees it another way, God is right.

When we have one emotion and God has another, God is right.

Don’t listen to the world or culture. God is right at all times.

The devil has been challenging God’s word ever since the Garden of Eden.

“Did God really say…?”

God is right, His ways work.

Psalm 19:7-11

Here is the message of the universe:

Proverbs 19:23

‘Fear of the Lord leads to life, bringing security and protection from harm.’

Your life will be better if you revere and honour the Lord.

Reverence for God brings life, security and protection

A little bit of wisdom #1

“When I understand what it means to fear God, I can live fearlessly.”

Nothing else intimidates us!

AMEN!
