Does The Holy Spirit Baptize

You can listen to the audio from this message here

You may have heard about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit but did you know the experience is not just Pentecostal doctrine but Biblical truth? Read Acts 1: 4-5, 8

The Bible clearly teaches that:

1. The Holy Spirit Baptized us in Jesus

When we get saved we are baptized into the Body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:13

2.The Disciples Baptized people in Water

Water baptism is more than just a sign. Matthew 28:19 shows the work of the Trinity in baptism.

3. Jesus Baptizes us in The Holy Spirit

John the Baptist tells us in Matthew 3:11 that Jesus will baptize us with the Holy Spirit and fire. John was not speaking to the 12 disciples but to the people, therefore, this baptism in the Holy Spirit it is not just for the 12 disciples but for everyone.

So what’s the difference between points 1 and 3? We have two different subjects.

In point one the Holy Spirit is doing the baptizing and introducing us to Jesus.

In point three we have Jesus who introduces us to the Holy Spirit.

Matthew, Mark and Luke and John all wrote about the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

These are the only themes that we find in all of the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John):

  1. Death of Jesus
  2. Resurrection of Jesus
  3. Feeding of 5,000 people
  4. Baptism in the Holy Spirit

All four Gospels agree that John the Baptist said Jesus is the One baptizing us in the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; John 1:33).

Let’s look at these three experiences from the life of Jesus:

Salvation, Water Baptism, and the Holy Spirit.

When we are born again, we are born as children of God made positionally perfect in Him.

Jesus was born as the perfect Son of God but was still baptized in water, Matthew 3: 13-17.

Was Jesus baptized in the Holy Spirit? Yes, He was.

When Jesus was water baptized in water the Holy Spirit descended on Him, Matthew 3:16. Now if Jesus needed the Holy Spirit, how much more do we need the Holy Spirit!

So Jesus gives us the pattern of Scripture.

  1. Salvation
  2. Water baptism
  3. Holy Spirit baptism

This is also the pattern followed in the book of Acts.

Acts 2:38

Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God (salvation), and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ (water baptism) for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Holy Spirit baptism).

Now the Bible does not stop here – there was more for them.

Acts 8:14-17

When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God’s message, they sent Peter and John there. 15 As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit. 16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Also read Acts 19:1-6 which tells the story of Apollos and some believers’ baptism in Jesus and the Holy Spirit

they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied.’

(exerpt)

Note that the baptism of the Holy Spirit did not just happen in Acts 2! Acts 19 was 25 years after Pentecost.

When we are baptized in water the old life is cut off. When we get baptized in the Holy Spirit we get the power to walk in the new life. This is the complete work that God wants to achieve in us.

To go to heaven all we need is Christ as Saviour!

BUT, to be His witnesses we need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit.
