What’s Really Important In Life
“You Only Live Twice”
#YOLT: ‘You only live twice’
There is so much in life that really does not matter, and we must make the effort to focus on what does matter. The Church exists to make a difference. Our ultimate purpose is to make a difference.
In 1 Timothy 6:17-19 Paul speaks of a present world, therefore it means there is another world. Heaven is where we will spend the rest of our lives and this is the main motivation for generosity. What we do matters not just for this life, but for eternity. There is more to life than this life.
Heaven is an incredible place! Those who pass away, if they had an opportunity to come back – they would not!
Unfortunately, we all have the tendency to live for the moment. It is very dangerous to think just about the now.
Social media has the hashtag: #YOLO: ‘You Only Live Once!’
No, we don’t! That may be a cool hashtag, but it is not true.
Let me give you my hash tag: #YOLT: ‘You Only Live Twice!’
Because people think they will only live once, they project a reckless behaviour. We need to live with the reality that we will live twice. As a Pastor, one of my roles is to prepare you, not just for this life, but for the life to come. Read Ecclesiastes 3:11 and Hebrews 9:27.
There are two different judgements that we will face one day.
1. White Throne Judgement: A judgement based upon our acceptance (or lack)
of the salvation that Jesus offers.
2. Believers Judgement: What kind of life did you live in service to Jesus?
Believers Judgment will not determine Heaven or Hell, but it will determine what Heaven is like (2 Corinthians 5:10).
We will be rewarded for all the sacrifices in the Kingdom of God and His Church (Revelation 22:12). What a day that will be!
Let me give you some eternal principles you will never forget:
1. We are just passing through
This is a good concept to have especially when we are suffering. We do not belong here. Don’t put everything that you have into this life. Read Philippians 3:18-20.
We must focus on heaven; when we do, the words found in Hebrews 11:14-16 apply to us.
God is looking for those who are okay with just passing through.
2. My time on earth is short
Considering eternity, 100 years is nothing. Our lives are like the morning fog (James 4:14).
If we think we have a lot of time we will tend to waste our time, squander it, misuse it (Psalm 90:12).
How many years do you have left to make a difference?
This life is a test; we do not get another opportunity once we are on the other side.
3. We should make the most of every opportunity
Let’s not miss the opportunities. There are opportunities to make a difference that we will not get back (Ephesians 5:15-16).
The unexpected can happen.
We will be standing before God, giving account and the Believer’s work for God will be tested that day.
Never confuse the 1st and 2nd judgment.
We will pass the first judgement solely by accepting what Christ has done for us.
But the second judgement, we will be judged according to the work we have done.
- The souls we brought in His Kingdom
- The mission work we did
- The activities we served in
- The people we have helped and blessed
The work we do has to:
- Have value
- Show in heaven
- Have the right foundation
- Be done with the right motive
We must do things according to the will of God. We must not just work for Jesus, but also with Jesus.
The only work that survives is what is done in the will for God.
There is only one thing that matters and that is eternity. If it doesn’t show up there, we will lose!
PRACTICAL WAYS TO LIVE YOUR LIFE
1. Go Through Life Looking up and not Looking Around
Eyes on Heaven and not on earth. Don’t fall in love with earth and the things of this earth, they will disappoint you.
Don’t fall in love with earth, keep in love with Jesus.
2. Give up Something now for Something I want Later
This is a good life principle to be used anytime in life. This also works on earth.
Discipline is delayed gratification. If I want to have enough money for the future, I need to let go of certain things now, for the future!
This is a great life principle, but it is an even better eternal principle. I could use all of this for me, but I am going to give some up now, because of my reward in eternity. I want to hear the Lord say, “Well done my good and faithful servant”
Matthew 6:19-21 reminds us not to store our treasures on earth where they could be destroyed, but in heaven where no one can destroy or steal them.
What does the bank account on the other side look like? When we start to live for eternity – eternity will start to live within us.
3. Intentionally Make a Difference
Plan. Chase the things you would like to do. Pray about the things you would like to impact. Plan for service. Plan to forgive. Making a difference will not just happen.
- Share your resources
- Have a plan
- Become a giver of your time, talent, and treasure.
- Share your faith
- Make God first in your life
What we do on earth we may regret, but we will never regret what we invest in eternity.
“Well done my good and faithful servant”, Jesus will be saying to everyone who has served well and diligently.
