WHO IS THE REAL JESUS?
2 Corinthians 11:4, ‘You happily put up with whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different kind of Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed.’
There are many false representations of who Jesus is. We need to know the real Jesus as He is the one that can change every area of our lives for the better.
Luke 4:16-21, ‘When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”
This was a well-known messianic passage that all the Jews were acquainted with.
Jesus purposely chose to read Isaiah 61 and said
“Today this passage is being fulfilled before your eyes.” In other words: “I am the Messiah.”
Imagine the shock amongst the people.
Luke 4:28-30, ‘When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious. Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They intended to push him over the cliff, but he passed right through the crowd and went on his way.’
In this passage Jesus speaks of His 5 foundational ministries.
This is who Jesus is and what Jesus does.
THE MINISTRY OF SALVATION
Luke 4:18:19, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me (the Messiah), Because He has anointed Me to preach the good news to the poor…’
Good News = Gospel
Poor = poor in spirit
2 Corinthians 6:2, ‘For God says, “At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.’
Jesus wants to save your soul.
THE MINISTRY OF Inner healing
Luke 4:18 (AMP), ‘To set free those who are oppressed (downtrodden, bruised, crushed by tragedy)’
Another translation says that Jesus came to heal the broken-hearted.
Jesus wants to heal your emotions.
Wounds, bruises, and hurts can become a prison.
Every one of us has to be released from emotional pain that has imprisoned us.
THE MINISTRY OF Freedom
Luke 4:18, “He has sent Me to announce release to the captives.”
We can be saved and still be held in bondage by Satan.
Examples of bondage: anger, fear, hate, unforgiveness, etc.
Jesus is not just a Savior, He is also a Deliverer.
Jesus wants to set you free from bondage.
THE MINISTRY OF PHYSICAL Healing
Luke 4:18, “And recovery of sight to the blind.”
Matthew 8:16-17, ‘That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, and he healed all the sick. This fulfilled the word of the Lord through the prophet Isaiah, who said, “He took our sicknesses and removed our diseases.”
1 Peter 2:24, ‘He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed.’
Jesus took our sins and our sicknesses.
We receive forgiveness of our sins and healing of our sicknesses the same way: by grace, through faith.
Jesus wants to heal your physical body.
THE MINISTRY OF anointing
Luke 4:18, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for He has anointed me…”
Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit.
Luke 3:21-22, ‘One day when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”
Acts 10:38, ‘And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.’
We know that God anointed Jesus.
John 1:33, ‘I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
Jesus baptises us with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:33 (CEV), ‘Jesus was taken up to sit at the right side of God, and He was given the Holy Spirit, just as the Father had promised. Jesus is also the one who has given the Spirit to us, and that is what you are now seeing and hearing.’
Jesus wants to fill you with the Holy Spirit.
The real Jesus can change every area of our lives for the better.
Jesus will never leave us hopeless.
Hebrews 13:8, ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.’
If Jesus did it then, Jesus will do it now.
