“The Unpolluted Language”
Our key scripture this week is Proverbs 18:21,
“The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.”
We have been talking about our words; how they connect us to God and people, and the power they hold. Today we are going to discuss the unpolluted language: the speaking of tongues.
We have been talking about bridling our tongue and submitting our tongues to God. It is interesting that the first thing the Holy Spirit does when He comes upon us is He deals with our tongues. When we speak in tongues, we are speaking in cooperation with the Holy Spirit.
In Acts 2:1-4, we read about the day of Pentecost. In Greek, “Pentecost” means 50. It is 50 days from the resurrection of Jesus. In this passage, the Holy Spirit descends on the disciples for the first time, coming down like flames or tongues of fire. Everyone is filled with the Spirit and starts speaking in tongues.
There are three things you should know about the pure, unpolluted language:
1) It is a language.
Speaking in tongues is not gibberish. It is a language, according to the Bible. See Acts 2:5-6.
Here are some myths about speaking in tongues:
You start speaking it fluently the first day.
When you learn to speak a language, it takes time. You do not speak it fluently at the beginning. When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, we need to learn to give our tongue to Him. You may not be fluent at first. It may only be a few sounds, but they come from your spirit and go direct to the heart of God. Our Father loves this type of communication, even though it may seem strange to us.
You cannot control it.
Many people think you enter a trance when you speak in tongues and because of that are afraid. However, just as we have control over other spiritual gifts, like teaching and prophecy, we have control over the gift of tongues as well. Speaking in tongues is an act of our will, as we cooperate with the Holy Spirit.
It is going to jump out of you one day.
People say, “I’ll believe in it when God gives it to me.” However, we need to understand that God has given you this gift. Let us learn to cooperate with the Holy Spirit.
The second thing you should know about the unpolluted language is this:
2) It is a language of the Holy Spirit
This is very important. 1 Corinthians 14:2 says,
“For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.”
Praying in tongues is a choice! We do not understand it in our minds, but we are doing it out of obedience. If we pray in tongues, our spirit (the inner person) is praying, but our understanding is unfruitful.
“For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying. 15 Well then, what shall I do? I will pray in the spirit, and I will also pray in words I understand. I will sing in the spirit, and I will also sing in words I understand ” (1 Cor. 14:14-15).
Paul said he would pray and sing in both, words he could understand, and words he could not. This makes amazing sense! How many prayers are not being answered because we are praying only with our own understanding? Is it possible that our spirit has more understanding than we have in our conscious mind? Remember, we are body, soul, and spirit!
There is so much controversy over speaking in tongues. This is because life and death are in the power of the tongue. The devil does not like it! Holy Spirit tongues will empower you for service. You will pray according to the will and the desires of God. We can submit our tongue to the Holy Spirit and be history makers, in the name of Jesus! Praying in tongues has nothing to do with feelings. We do it by faith, not by feelings.
Praying in the Spirit is also part of the armour of God. Ephesians 6:17-18 says,
“Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”
Is it possible that we are losing some of the battles because we are not building ourselves up spiritually? We are not allowing our spirit to pray, we are only praying with understanding.
The third thing you should know about the unpolluted language is:
3) It is a pure language
It bypasses the conscious, carnal, earth-affected mind. It goes directly from our regenerated heart to that of God. Zephaniah 3:9 says,
“For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language, That, they all may call on the name of the Lord, To serve Him with one accord.”
Note: one accord! Where have we seen these words before? In Acts 2:1, “When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.”
There is only one language without profanity. It is the language of the Holy Spirit.
I desire everyone at New Life to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, and to receive this amazing ability to speak this pure language. Step out in faith and give it a try!
